Welcome to Shelter Island
Shelter Island is a rare natural jewel formed by the Laurentide Ice Sheet thousands of years ago. Studies have shown that the first recorded inhabitants was an aboriginal popoulation from 500 to 1500 AD. Later, a community of Native Americans, part of the Algonquian - speaking people called The Manhansets lived here.
